In this chapter, the Underground Man explains that he's been living in a "seclusion" for so long that he doesn't understand what's going on around him. He tells his students that they shouldn't be afraid of the outside world because they're different from the people who live there. He also tells them that the martial arts world is a code name for the world, and that if they do the same thing as the people in it, they'll be considered as well. The Underground Man then introduces his new student, an 8 and a half-year-old girl. He introduces her to the other students and asks her to introduce herself so that her classmates will get to know her. He then tells her that she's "brave enough to transfer" to a smaller school so that he can teach her how to "be a person" .
