The story opens with a description of the "haunted house" . It is described as being so dark that it is impossible to see the ghost of Zee. Zee's mother begs the ghost to return the necklace that belonged to her child, but the ghost does not respond. The mother is able to regain the necklace only after the widow had left the village.
