The chapter opens with a letter from the "misanthrope" . The letter is from a man named "the one-eyed man" , who says that he's going to hunt down the killer of "rico's" corpse. The man says that the "poisonous gas" released by the ogres has been spreading throughout the area, and that it's time for the police chief to take a look at the area. The boy says that everyone has been running around looking for a place to hide. He asks the man if he can help him find his father, who has been killed by an ogre. The two of them decide that they'll just look in the side of the house and see what's wrong.
