This is a locked chapterChapter 1 The Boy from the Surface
About This Chapter
Once upon a time, death took refuge in the world of the ogres. The narrator tells us, there are only two ogres on the surface, and they can't use any weapons. The only weapon they have is a bucket, which has fallen down into the river below. They'll have to find a way to get it, since it's been used for a long time. They find a little boy, who's bleeding from the bucket's tip. They bring him up to the top of the stairs, where he'll get some hot water and change into his new clothes. He tells them that he's sorry for hitting his brother, but he doesn't know what his brother's name is. The ogre tells him that he has to avenge his brother for hitting him, and that he should be happy about it. He asks if they can get a refill of the bucket in a few days, since they've been drinking so early. He's not sure why they're drinking this early, since the Ayanashi come with a warning. They guard and transport people for traders, too. He apologizes for his misleading comments about the sur face, which is always dark. He says that he hasn't seen an ogre like that before. He wants to use a swivel gun to hit the ogre in the face, but the narrator tells him to hurry up, because the weapon isn't there yet. He also tells them to tap the bucket hard, because it has just been stabbed. The little boy runs away, and the narrator says that they haven't had an ogre before.
