The next morning, the Governess and Elmire discuss the situation at the asylum. The Governess wants to know where this guy came from, but Elmire says he's been ordered to keep an eye on her. Elmire is worried about her sister, and she's afraid for her life. She's also worried about what's going to happen to her brother-in-law, who's in the asylum with her. She asks Elmire to tell her what happened to Alys, and he says he doesn't know. He's worried about the connection between Elmire and his sister. He also worries about the place, because it's supposed to be a healing place for the souls of angels who've been "stained by hell." Elmire asks if he can take Elmire out of the asylum, but she can't because Elmire isn't yet completely stable. She also asks the nurse to open the asylum for her, so that she can talk to Elmire alone. She tells Elmire that they're both going on a trip, and that she'll be back soon. She says they've got two people in hell, and they need to find them ASAP. She begs him to take her back to the asylum so they can find them. He agrees, and the two of them head off to look for them.
