In this chapter, we learn that Mrs. Harley's funeral is over, and that her son, John Harley, is now living at the house of the Harleys. We learn that John has handled everything after his mother's death, and now that he is living with the family, he seems to be more trustworthy than his father ever was. We also learn that the family is preparing to have dinner, and Miss Sorbus is invited to join them. She is quite attractive, and Harley is sure that she can win over many men with her puffy eyes. He tells her that rumors are that Evans is well educated and polite, but that she is not to be believed
