About This Chapter
In the fifth period of the novel, Tanigaki and Nakata discuss whether or not they should pursue their love. They both agree that it would be better not to pursue the girl because she is still in love with another man. They also agree that they should not pursue the other man because he does not seem to be thinking through the situation. However, they do not mean to imply that they are the same person. They do not say the same thing, and they are not in the same mood. They are surprised to learn that the girl has told them the truth, and that it is better to pretend ignorance than to admit it. They thank each other for their help in the matter, and the girl thanks them for their kindness. She also tells them that since they became friends, she has been able to talk books with them. They discuss the rainy day of the first semester when they were both in love, and she tells him that she would like to share her umbrella with him, but he will not let her do so. He tells her that he will head home if she does not stop talking to him, and he feels that she is insensitive to him. He feels that he is being stabbed in the back by the girl he loves, and wonders how long it has been since he stopped talking about love.
