Now that he's back on stage, the Underground Man realizes that he has a lot of work to do. He's got to get his act together, he says, or he'll lose his audience. He doesn't want to sound like a punk, he wants to sound more like his real self. The Underground Man admits that he hasn't been very good at his craft, but he still wants to prove himself to the world.
