In this chapter, we learn that the students at Henry Swanton's private school are competing against each other in a series of events. The students are so eager to win that they are willing to eat their own guts in order to do so. In the first event, the students compete against public school students in a game of football, and in the second, they compete against Henry's students in an event called "Science Fair Deep Space Death Ray Satellite. The students compete in the science fair not as a science fiction, but as a competition between students from private and public schools. The student in question, Henry, is a chess prodigy who has won four state titles in a row and is considered one of the top chess players in the nation. The other students in the class are also very eager to compete, but they are intimidated by the pressure of everyday life.
