The chapter opens with the narrator describing his earliest memories of darkness. He gradually becomes aware of a space in which things are separate from one another. One of the other people in the room would read to him, and the narrator is glad to hear that he has an idea. The narrator says that he doesn't know if the book will be approved, but he does know that it will be fun creative ideas. He says that even if they don't get it, it will still speak to them. One day, the manager of the company comes to see him. She tells him about changes in the company's priorities. She also tells him that there's a "used persona pitch" that's ready to be used by the visual designer team. She asks the narrator not to cancel the upload of the book, but to double check the progress.
