About This Chapter
The next morning, the Governess complains to her husband about the way things are going with her and her son. She tells him that she's going back to her family in the Netherlands. She's sick of sweets, but she doesn't need cake right now. The Governess tells her husband that he's overreacting, and that she shouldn't have been so harsh to him in the first place. She says that if she'd been more attentive to her son from the beginning, he would have grown up to be as good as she is. She also says that it's too cruel for her to share her son with anyone else. He'll grow up alone in a foreign country, and he won't be able to make friends like she did five years ago when she first came to live with him. She asks him if he has Christian with him and he says that he does. She goes on to say that she has been looking for him all night, and she'll try to talk to him today if he'll let her sleep.
