The narrator tells us that the most beautiful things in life are the things that make people happy. The most beautiful thing in life is the thing that makes people happy: the hand. The narrator says that he'd rather thank his aunt for making him a master craftsman than to thank her for giving him such a small amount of money. We learn that the jeweler, Jean-Jacques, is receiving money from the margaret in exchange for the use of his precious hand. We also learn that this is not the first time that a jeweler has received money from a marquise; in fact, this is the very first time someone has offered money to a jeweler.
