Back on the Great Wall of China, Shufu asks why he's so hung up about the box. He was once a research subject at a madrid university, but the subject got into a riot and fled. The university was shut down, and Shufu was forced to go back to Japan. Shufu tells him that the assassins are always trying to get in his way, and that's why he has to leave. He also tells Shufu that he heard that the mongols have been trying to attack the wall. The grandson of the day-an-khan , al-tan-khan, is trying to establish himself as a local lord. He's also trying to push for an invasion by the Ming, which means that the Ming are planning an invasion of the mainland. The letter is addressed to Zhang-yong, but Shufu warns him that he'll be trampled underfoot if he lets the Ming in.
