In this chapter, we are introduced to the protagonist, Martin, who is aboard the ship of the European defense organization. He is in the process of constructing a subterranean sexcapade on board the ship, but his budget does not allow him to do so. He calls for the launch of the capsule, but the launch is delayed because of the cost of the launch equipment. He then calls for a control base to be set up, but it is too far away to be of any use to him. He tells the control base that the capsule is ready to land, but that it will cost another million dollars to repair it. The subject has been released, but another one of the insects has picked up the smell of the mum, and is sleeping on Martin's feet. Martin is horrified to find that he has been infested with roaches and other insects, and that his brain is "a complete blank" . He wants to contact the agent who sent him to the mission, but he is unable to recall what he is doing. He decides to go back to the command center to get some rest, and he tells the other men to move the capsule to the top of the stairway, where a devil awaits them.
