In this chapter, we learn that the wedding dowry is to be paid to Caitheline, and that she has requested that her maid, Aurora, "her flower" , be a hustler for the royal family. When she asks him how he is, he tells her that he is fine, but that the family is not the "dark part of the depressing" that he thought they would be. He apologizes for the wrong impression he has had, and thanks her for inviting him. He is glad that she is much better, because it was a "big loss" for her father and mother, and she is a "daughter to me" . He thanks her again for her kind words, and says that he missed her. He says that everyone thought he was wrong, but he promised to come anyway. He introduces himself as frederick, and Aurora introduces him to her.
