The sun is too high, and they're resting in the fields. The widow sings a lullaby to her only son, who is sleeping in the temple. She tells him that he will be the greatest merchant in the land he'll ever live in. He'll travel the world, she says, and his wealth will only grow as he grows up. She compares him to a "pogrom" , or a raid, on the people of the greater ring. A pogrom means a raid on a specific area, like shael or the mountains. There used to be a tribe called the Quazzaq that would raid the area, but after they left, life was peaceful. Now, they've killed all of them. They've also killed a bunch of towns in the northeast, like gavmayim and kiton. There's also a big tribe called stom in the south. The two of them are going to visit all of these towns. They don't really know what's going on, but they do know that the Quzzaq will raid all of the towns for sport. Sometimes, he says, when you see your father die, you feel pain, anger, and fear. He says that's why he made the pact with Azazel. When he gets the armor on, he can feel the emotions of the people around him. He doesn't need to worry about his father's death, because he's proved himself to be strong enough to survive. The girl is "of no concern" to him at this moment. He tells her to chill out.
