This chapter opens with a description of a young man who has just arrived at the academy. He tells us that he has changed his room because of the attention he is getting from the other students. He asks one of the students to stay away from him so that he can talk to someone else. The other student, Lin Qian, is also present at the time of the change in his room. Lin tells the young man that he and his friend Sikong have bet that they will meet at a waterfall on the back mountain. Sikong tells him that they must excel in bringing honor and prestige to their family. The young man, however, is disgusted by the bet and tries to get away from it. He notices that the other student is following him. He scolds him for being so close to him and tells him to be more careful with the bowl. He also notices that he is wearing a shirt that belongs to a stray dog, and he asks the students if they would like to help him find a new name for the dog.
