About This Chapter
The bird tells us that he's from a small village called Kijiko, where his father died seven years ago. He's grateful to his father for giving him the "inararizushi," or fish charm, which he keeps in his house. The bird has heard someone sneaking into the forest, and he wants to catch a big fish. He wants to run away, but he can't because of the "smell" of a human's mouth. The demon tells him to grab the fish, and if he doesn't, he'll eat him. He tells the bird that he thought he was going to die, but that the demon let him escape because he thought the demon was a good guy. He asks the bird if he'd like to be eaten, and the bird refuses, saying that humans are "selfish creatures" who think only of them. He says that he has to get the demon to eat him, otherwise it's "meaningless." The bird says that if he gets to meet the demon the next day, he plans to talk to him about his life.
