About This Chapter
Ariou arrives on the island and tells the narrator that he has come to see him. He asks the narrator why he is there, and the narrator replies that he came to laugh at him for being so foolish and living alone on this island. The narrator tells him that he was exiled from the island in the wake of the gatani incident, and that he is still living as a beggar on it. He also says that some of the island's people have brought him some food, and he asks them to bring him some gruel. He tells them to hurry up and get dressed, because he is going to head back to the island to see his master.
