About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a description of broken crackers. The narrator tells us that the crackers are cheap because they're broken, and that's why he hates them. He also says that he just saw an old man in the hospital who's in a bad condition. He's sure that the old man is crying because he's afraid of his defect and wants to be loved. He calls the ambulance to take him to the hospital, and the narrator thanks him for letting him ride with him. He tells the narrator that the snacks that the kid stole from the store were also broken, but they were also cheaper. He says that if the kid had broken one of them, he would have been mad, but if he had broken the other one, he'd be happy. He thanks the narrator for holding his hand when he was hurting, and he says that the boy who stole the snacks was furious with the whole family for being so rough around him. But the narrator doesn't want to give the kid the name of the person who stole his snacks, because he thinks the kid will be working at a law firm. He shaves his beard, which he says is a dirty thing to do, because it's so young. He apologizes for his first time being hurt, and thanks the previous editor for looking out for him since his debut.
