In this short scene, the Governess tries to find her way back to her hiding place. She realizes that she has lost her way, but she is still able to get to the door of the house where she is hiding. The Governess tells her mother that she is going to make a surprise for her. She tells her that she wants to paint the house with white shells for her birthday. She asks her mother if she will be safe on her own. She says that she will return in three days. When she finds out who she is, she asks where her satchel is, and she tells her she has hidden it in a pot. She offers to take her to the lanterns and bring her back safely.
