About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the man in question is the theater manager of the Salas family house in the city of Salas, Portugal. He and his wife have just returned from a five-week tour of Europe, and he is delighted to have found a talented young actor to replace his late wife. The man tells us that his wife was very strict with the young actors, and that they were forced to work very hard to earn a living. He tells them that he would like to live in the attic of the house after he gets back from Europe, so that he can show everyone that they can make it up to the top. The young man thanks his wife for her hospitality, and tells her that he hopes she will wake up in the morning and wake him up with her little stars. He says that the famous actress who came to see his show came to watch his show, so he forgives her for leaving him all alone with her. He then asks the young man if he is on his way to another show, and the man says that he is. He asks if his mother is still alive, and she replies that she is not. She says that she still has her rehearsals, but that she has given up on her career. She tells the young men that they should stop acting like they are, because they will never be as good as their mother.
