About This Chapter
In this chapter, the narrator tells us that he's going to raise up a "prophet" from among the people of China. He'll put his words in the mouth of the prophet, and the prophet will speak to the people in his name. The prophet will have to speak in the narrator's name, because the narrator himself will need the prophet's help. The narrator is confused by all of this. He doesn't know where he is, or how he'll get out of it, or what to do with his life. He can't believe that he has been drifting around in the middle of nowhere for a day. The only explanation he can come up with is that the lake is a natural phenomenon. He wishes he could have seen the monkeys in the shallow water, but he can never figure out how they could have killed him before he left the bridge. The monkeys remind him of college, so that's why he thinks they're the ones who killed him. He wonders if someone could have pulled the blood off the bridge before he got there, but that would explain everything, since he was on another planet. He begs the prophet to move to another planet, because he is never going back to earth.
