The narrator tells us that he's finally able to take care of Mr. Kishida. He's saved up all the money he needed to go back to school, and now he can go home to his family in the city of Tohoku. We learn that it's been eight years since she left the city, and that she's now an apprentice geisha in a training school. The narrator is thrilled to see her back, and he tells her that he was hoping they'd seen her last. He tells her to be grateful that they're taking care of her, and she says that she should be grateful too, since they've given her a chance to be independent. She wonders if there might be a way for her to live at the OKiya school, where she'll be able to go to school without feeling like a burden. She's so happy to see that they sent her a luxury car to come pick her up, and to take her across the bridge to the city. She asks the narrator to find the map of the city over there, so that she can figure out where to find her way home.
