About This Chapter
The train is on its way to the next station, and the protagonist asks the conductor to stand behind the train's white line and wait for it to arrive. The protagonist, who is 28 years old, is a high school teacher and a student. He has perfect pre-conceived notions of what a perfect person should be. He tells us that he wants to be perfect in every aspect of his life, starting with breakfast and ending with changing things. He says that he waits in the front of the line at the train station, but he has a convenient way to get there: an office worker gets off at the station every morning and waits for the next train to arrive in four minutes. The office worker doesn't arrive until the door opens, so the protagonist can board the train in the sixth car instead. This way, he says, he can get to his lessons without having to wait in the line. He also says that the office worker is a convenient man because he gets off before the doors open, so he can take a seat in the last car of the train. He then says that someone is trying to steal his reserved seat, but this is outside of his comfort zone. He's worried that the woman will run for it, but she's too far away from him to do so. The elevator is under construction, so there's no way for the protagonist to get back at the woman. He offers the woman his seat, and she accepts it.
