About This Chapter
Act Two is set in a cafe in the East End of London. It's the middle of the day, and we're told that it's been a long time since we've seen the two of them together. As they're sitting in the cafe, the narrator tells us that he's not surprised that the two have met again. He's sure that they've been hanging out for a while now, and he'd be surprised if they haven't. The narrator tells the audience that he is going to make the young man "a star" by acting like a true friend to him. He says that he wants to make sure that he takes responsibility for all of the decisions that he makes, and that he needs to "make up his own mind" about what to do with his life. He warns the young woman that she's going to have to make a lot of decisions, and she should listen to him more closely. The young woman says that she doesn't understand why she'd have to take responsibility for her life, and the narrator says that's fine, but he'll make her a star if she'll just listen more closely to what he has to say. He tells her that she needs to make up her own mind about what she should do with her life. She's got to make her own decisions, he says, and not be influenced by anyone else's decisions. He asks her if she has seen anyone like him who's "fighting that nature," and she says she hasn't, but that someone like her is fighting that nature. She tells him that he has the right to live his life the way he wants it to be, but she has the wrong to preach about it.
