In this chapter, Bardolph explains that he is one of the shadow guardians, a group of people who have the ability to control the shadows. They were assigned to guard the 12 towers that cover the ground below. One day, they received a notice of an attack on one of these towers, but they were too late. They discovered that two more guardians had been assigned to the site, and they decided to stay behind to watch over Bardolph. When he awoke, he had no memory of anything, and the two of them decided to leave him behind to see if he could use his shadow to help them.
