About This Chapter
The writer enters the village and explains that he blew up a bridge to cut off the column of armored vehicles from the rest of the army. He also tells us that he threw "molotov cocktails" at the enemy's tanks, which are vulnerable to attack. He then tells us about his grandfather, who fought against the "movites" in the battle of Kornotop, in 1659. This is the same battle that the writer's grandfather fought against in the war of the 50s. He says that the "lewis" of model 1913, which his grandfather used to have, belongs to his grandfather. He explains that his grandfather lost it in the "cards" when he fought with the "musovites." He also says that he had been falling down trees for hours, but that did not stop the tanks. Everyone in the village is in a panic because the column is surrounded. He tells them to get out of the way, but they do not listen to him. The "wasp" of a zeppelin, which the writer had planned to shoot down, clears the road for the column, but it is now down to aviation. The writer says that nobody believed that they could stop the column.
