In this chapter, we learn that the father of the beast's son has banned his son from coming out of the house during the heat of the day. This means that the boy is confined to the house only once a day, and that he can only do so if he consults with a doctor. The doctor, koju, is kind enough to tell the boy's father that his son's sex drive is "abnormal" and that the greed species of beast is "an endangered species" because they rarely come into contact with humans. When the boy was a child, the father had to deal with the beast, who would not listen to him and would bite everything he touched. The father says that he raised the beast patiently, but that it was a "miracle" that the beast didn't die when the child was abandoned.
