About This Chapter
The narrator tells the story of the first rayveks, a family that moved to the valley. They were a happy family until the town founder, named Cutlass, tried to sell their farm to him, but the family refused, killing all of them except one. The oldest son fell asleep in the field one night and woke up to find the land on fire, and the family shot him over and over until he died. The narrator asks the boy to look out over the field to see if he can spot the scarecrow. He tells the boy that he can stay if he's scared. The boy says he'll come back during the "come on" and then he and the girl will go back to the farm. The girl says she's afraid of the scarecrow, but she doesn't want to scare the boy, so she runs off. When the boy comes back, the girl tells him that the scarecrow isn't there, and that she'll be back soon. He's happy to see her, and he tells the girl that he thinks the stories about the broken ceiling and broken kitchen are true. The story ends with the boy saying that the gas leak was the cause of the fire, but he can't explain what he would say to his parents. He says it was a good prank gone wrong, but that he'd been missing for a long time.
