About This Chapter
The narrator introduces himself as a fresh student in school. He has been working as a dishwasher for the past year. He is tired, but enjoys his job. He tells us that he is surprised to see the man sitting down in the rye field. The man's skin is pale, his hair is warm and fluffy, and his neck is cold. The narrator says that the man grabbed his arm tightly, and that it was his first time seeing a beautiful person. He thanks the man for his kind words, and says that he hopes that they will meet again. He asks the man if he is simple minded, and the man says he is, but he is hopeful. He says that there is a chance that they may meet again, and asks if he should work slowly. He then asks if the man and the woman are fighting, and if they are, he says, they seem to be men. He wants to hurry up and leave, but the man behind the door interrupts him, and he asks the woman if she is okay. She says that she is, and then he asks her to stand behind a yellow line so that he can see her. She replies that she was not sure if the dream was a dream, but that she had to use her vacation time to get better. She tells him that she left him a note in her address book, and she asks him to make sure that she does not deliver it there. She then asks him if he would like to remember the white neck that he had on that day.
