About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the narrator and her grandmother are strangers in their native land. It is a pleasure for them to meet each other. The narrator recalls how strange this land is, before it is completely forgotten. He is brought back to his capiz windows by the whisperings of little gods. He tells his grandmother that he has very important business to attend to. He asks her to be white like him. She tells him that he must not involve her in old ways. She reminds him that if his grandfather finds out about it, he will be very angry. She says that she is all strangers no matter how different or estranged they are. We are all natives, she says, that is the destiny decided by the gods. Some win and conquer, some lose, and become forgotten. When no one can replace our tongues, we change our minds. Our spirit is strong, but now the old world is with me. He says that he cannot remember what he does not understand. He wonders if it is real, that it is as real as his memory of it. He wants to learn more, but he says that magic does not burn bright in the present time. It grows dimmer still, he says, and all the secrets will remain hidden with him. He wishes that she would teach him how to live a long, happy life. He lived a long life, but some of his memories are worth remembering and some should be erased. The familiar becomes unfamiliar. The old becomes new. A cold sweat, a lost tradition, a broken connection, a forgotten god, a first kiss, a mistake enough. Some memories never leave.
