The narrator tells us that he and Phoebe have known each other since they were students at the art school. Phoebe is a talented singer, and the narrator thinks that Phoebe will become a famous singer in her own right. Phoebe asks the narrator to accompany her on her performance trips, and Phoebe says that she would like to ask for a "leave of absence" when she needs to go abroad for a vacation. Phoebe also says that the two of them would be worried if Phoebe got sick while they were traveling. Phoebe becomes more famous and more successful. The narrator helps her manage her fan club and gigs, and they buy her special local souvenirs whenever she travels for her performances. Phoebe tells the narrator that one day a friend of hers suddenly told her that Phoebe wants to meet her, and she introduces Phoebe to the narrator, who introduces her to Phoebe. Phoebe gradually replaces the narrator's position as her manager. Soon after Phoebe threatened to expose her relationship with the narrator if Phoebe was fired, the narrator took fake wedding photos of himself and a friend in their "circle." If Phoebe found out about their relationship, he would announce his marriage to the friend to protect Phoebe. He does not know why the photos were suddenly exposed, but he suspects that they were "traps set by someone."
