In this scene, Desdemona tells the audience that she is the daughter of a priest and that she was raised in the Catholic Church. She tells them that she and her mother have fled to the Holy Land in order to escape the wrath of the Roman Emperor, who has forbidden them to worship in the church. She says that she has come to tell the story of her life, but that it is not a love story.
