The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the book, in which the narrator is introduced as a young disciple of the ima-yi school. He has just asked the book for the first time, and has used the book "without any fear" . The narrator asks the book's author if he can borrow the hand of a taoist to consume the life force of quing, and the author tells him that he can do so. He also tells the narrator that he has read Lin's fortune, and that there will be no major problems for the next few days. The young disciple asks the elder tang when his son will get married. The elder tang tells the young disciple that it is natural for a child to give up his family's interests for the sake of his own, and he will meet with the boy if he sees the box with the dragon talisman in it. The old man tells the disciple that the box is empty and that he will not be able to find the box if he wants to steal the key to the kingdom of hell. The disciple asks if the old man has seen the box before, but the elder man tells him he has not. He tells the boy that he must leave the box in two days, because he has already accepted the key.
