This chapter's epigraph comes from a poem by the Ming family patriarch , who says that a hundred years before, he and his senior scholars had divined a horoscope for the young man. He tells the elder , "a hundred years ago, my ma'y seniors divined... a trigram... specially for you" . The old man asks the elder how the Ming lineage differs from the two other schools, and the elder replies that the differences are due to "different philosophies" , and that the three schools are the same. The elder tells the old man that he can only help him by entering the house by the "feng shui array," which is a symbol of luck. He says that he knows someone who should be there soon, but that he doesn't want the elder to go with him to fetch him. He asks why the elder hasn't gone to fetch the man himself. The older man says that the house has been "isolated" from outside the world, so it's possible that a normal person would be able to enter the house, but the elder says that's impossible because the house is "haunted." The elder then says that there is a man living in the house who's "dangerous," and that he'll explain the situation to the elder later. He's going to take the elder with him, and they'll go down to the pool to look for the man.
