About This Chapter
It's dark when the commissar knocks on the door. He's the ex-agent who captured her. She doesn't turn around. She knows what she'll see. It'll be commissar noir. She's not hungry. He says he'll give her an ice cream sundae. She wants to know why he gave up his job as an agent and why he works for the enemy. He gives her a vanilla sundae instead. She asks why he's giving her ice cream, and he says it'll make her feel like she hasn't been given in. He tells her that after twenty years, he'd like people to just stay saved. She tells him that she and her friends learned in school that the Madrassa attack was really bad, but nobody ever told them what happened. They wouldn't, he says. He offers to show her the sights of iron city. She turns up her nose and asks him if this is a trick. He assures her that it isn't. She wonders if she's afraid to run away.
