The scene opens in the sculpture room of the university. It is the second time that the two young lovers have been together, and they are both disappointed to find that they have not been able to have breakfast together. They have been studying for their exams, and the exam is the 29th day after the end of the semester. When they are interrupted by the sound of a knock at the door, they realize that it is the birthday party of one of their friends, who is also celebrating his birthday. They are both anxious to find out what has happened, and when they find out that the party is celebrating the birthday of someone else, they are even more anxious.
