About This Chapter
In the third round of the men's college soccer tournament, a group of students from Yonsei High School, Yonsei's second-best team, take the field. The students are nervous because they're about to play in front of a packed house. Yonsei tries to calm them down, reminding them that they've just advanced to the "third round" and that the Yonsei team will soon begin their high school season. He also reminds them that their starting back, Hiroshi Hayashi, is "damn sive" , and that their left back, Oshiba, "can't lose" . He tells Yonsei that he's not worried about Hayashi's performance, but that he is worried about the performance of the other team's backs, which Yonsei calls "grunges." Yonsei tells the students not to worry, though, because he thinks they'll win the game with "cheap remarks." He also tells them that one of the referees, Kiichi Shimura, is a first-year player and that he has a "monster grip" on the backs of the opposing players. He adds that he hasn't seen Shimura play since he arrived in Japan, and Shimura is one of their corners backs. He says that Shimura isn't any older than him , so he should "go ow san knock it off," and Yonsei apologizes for his rudeness at the tournament.
