About This Chapter
When the narrator is a young child, his parents send him to live with a couple of teachers. The teachers have a good relationship with the narrator, but sometimes they get into a fight. One day, the narrator goes to the bathroom and sees someone standing outside the doorway. He lowers his head to avoid eye contact with the man. The narrator doesn't know what he's talking about, but he does know that the man's eyes are staring at him. He's not sure what to make of it, but it's clear that he wants to see what's going on. He turns off the light and tells the story of his middle school experience with the elevator. He goes to his art studio, which is located on the 13th floor, and when he presses the button to open the door, the elevator does not open. He assumes that someone is in the basement, but no one is there.
