This chapter opens with a flashback to the previous chapter, in which Cai Mingyu explains that he has fallen in love with his sister-in-law, Fang Luxie, who is a corpse-examiner. He explains that Fang's "stubborn and wilful" nature makes her unattractive to him, and that he is looking for a woman with a higher social rank than Fang. He also reveals that Fang has a crush on Cai's sister, but that he does not know what to make of the crush. He asks Fang why his face is so red, and Fang tells him that it is a sign of overworking. He then explains that his pulse is weak, and his cheeks are red from the heat of his body. Fang is so touched by his sister's love for him that he wants to report a missing person's case to the police. When the constable tries to question him about his wife's disappearance, Fang attacks him, claiming that he did not mean to injure him. The constable, however, does not want to discuss the matter any further, and he leaves the room.
