About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a splash of water from a nearby pond. It's the same kind of splash you'd get if you were drowning in a pool of water. The narrator wants to know what's going on. He asks the young woman why she's giving up singing. She's not giving up music, the narrator says, because that's how everyone is supposed to be happy. He tells her that monks need to stop being monks and become musicians. Monks can make millions of dollars, he says, but he won't be leaving the jungle. He's been a monk since he was a young man. He used to love painting, but his chief wouldn't let him become a painter. So he took up weapons and became a jungle warrior. He wishes he could continue painting, though, because it would help bring prosperity to his tribe. The young woman is depressed, but the narrator reminds her that it's still important to develop yourself in virtue, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics. She tells the young man to stop doing his homework and start investing in the future. He says he's doing what he wanted to do as a kid. He sighs and says, "I've tried pursuing after my dreams" .
