A week later, the narrator returns to class to find that his friend has transferred to another class. He complains that his classmates have become overly friendly with him, and that he does not even know them very well. He asks his friend to give him a love letter, but his friend refuses, saying that she does not have any interest in the letters. He tells her that he will tell her about the letters when they return, and she agrees to come over to his house. The narrator then tells her about her friend's reaction to the love letters, which is that she will not be happy if the letters are read, and he will not accept them. He also criticizes her for giving the letters to him without taking into account her feelings for him. She tells him that he should not be mad at her for leaving early, for she is inconsiderate to him. He says that he would accept the letters if she would take her feelings into account
