About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he believes everyone has experienced some childhood trauma. Some people have said that the beggar ate "human flesh" . The narrator says that the smell of stewed meat in the beggar's house is "particularly mouth watering and attractive". The narrator sneaks a look at the house out of curiosity. The beggar is holding a leg of an animal and muttering about the "delicious human flesh" as if he were holding it in his hands. He flees the house immediately. The old beggar is always wearing black fur vest, regardless of spring, summer, autumn, or winter. Apparently, he used to have a sip or two of human flesh each time he had a sip. The magpie has laid eggs, and the narrator is looking for a way to steal them from the beggar. He is extremely scared, but when he hears the beggars ridiculous barking sound, he almost laughs out of it. He stands on the ground and asks the beggar how he knows he is there. He says that he is curious about how the beggar knew he was there, and that it was "nothing but nonsense" to scare the children. His mother breaks down and cries because she is
