About This Chapter
It's time for firewood, and the narrator asks if anyone has arrived yet. He's been waiting for a while, but now that he's done with the firewood, he can't bear to wait any longer. He wants to know why the narrator hasn't been able to do more with his time. He asks the narrator what ingredients he used. The narrator explains that musk is a scent obtained from killing male deer and drying it out in their scent pouch. It smells like musk and is used to attract the opposite gender, but it's a bit different from the musk that he is familiar with. He also explains that ambergris has been added to musk. He adds that the scent is unpleasant, but when mixed with other scents it lasts longer than musk. This type of pheromone is quite pricey, but the narrator says that ancient Chinese emperors particularly liked it. He says that the next perfumer will be from the Jae family, but that's not the end of the story yet. This is the type of fragrance that the narrator's family has been using for generations, and how could it possibly fail? The narrator says he'll pay the woman twice as much for the firewood she has today as she did for it in the last house. This will be enough for him to enjoy himself for the winter.
