About This Chapter
Now that she's back in the States, the narrator tells her fiance, Tony, that she loves him and will marry him. She tells him that she plans to become a housewife and that she doesn't need money to do so. She's tired of working all the time and wants to spend more time with her family. Tony tells her that he's too busy to worry about her, and that he just wants her company. The narrator weeps and says that she was wrong to think that he would love her if she gave him money and a warm home. He thought that she would leave him if he got a material life, and he was wrong, too. She decides to let go of him.
