The scene opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, when Lan Xu is still in love with Viola. He tells her that he has to go to a variety show the next day, and that he cannot be with her because she is not "as obedient and gentle" as he is. She asks him if he has ever loved him, and he admits that he was just trying "to get promoted by his popularity." He then tells her about the time he asked the staff at a tea bar to give him a sedative, and how he woke up the next morning feeling dizzy. He says that he didn't know anything about it until his friend found out about it. He also says that if they don't "fight for it," they'll be trampled underfoot and become "a bargaining chip" for him to gain "benefits." The scene ends with a soliloquy, in which Viola says that she doesn't regret her love for Lan, but that she will hate him forever.
