In this chapter, the young narrator tries to convince his father to take his son to the music studio. The young narrator explains that he has been practicing his violin playing and accompanying other musicians in order to make a living. He says that he was going to use the accompaniment from the movie picnic as a starting point for his music, but that he ended up using it because he was hungry.
