About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the world is out of balance because of people's ambition, desire, and arrogance. Nature responds to this by bringing everything back to balance. For example, if you were to die on the left hand, you'd be able to see the extinct "divine crane," a horned horse that used to exist thousands of years ago. The "poof" of the crane is said to be medicine, and it's here that the immortals of heaven built the island for humans to live on. The immortal tells the reader that he's hiding because he was inspired by the gods earlier. He says that today, people are destroying nature and destroying the awe of things. They use war, famine, and plague to restrain humans so that they can't kill themselves. The plague is the plague that's spreading all over the world. The narrator tells us that the apocalypse is coming, and the world has already been destroyed by humans in the past. Whoosh is the one who balanced the world over the last thousand years. He's now out of energy and wants to go back to his normal life. He thanks the narrator for saving them from the sea. He asks the narrator to get someone else to take his place.
