The chapter opens with a soliloquy by Mann, in which he tells the audience that he is tired and ready to meet his parents. He says that he wants to know what has happened to Mr. Olyang. After graduating from college, they got married and had time to eat. One night, he found her dead in their room with a heart attack. She had asked for his help in her last breath, but she had died of acute heart disease. Mann says that if he had ever loved her more, she would never have left him at such an early age. He adds that he does not deserve love, and that being a spurned student is his only choice. He tells his sister that he will take her side no matter what she does or chooses to do.
